The Nature of Change 2008
Location : Whitstable, Kent.
Materials : Mixed media
Funded by : Arts Council England Lottery Award

I was invited to collaborate with Whitstable based musician and composer Stephen Clee to work with two local schools exploring the changing seafront of Whitstable. We worked with two primary schools classes from Whitstable - Swalecliffe and St Mary's. The first phase involved two field trips. We statred with St Mary's class 4 at The Battery and worked our way along West Beach, ending at the harbour. The second trip, with Swalecliffe class 4 began at the Long Rock, Swalecliffe, and journeyed along the beach, taking in The Street, and eventually arriving at the harbour.

The process of engaging the children with the landscape was key. We explored a range of 'tactics' to focus in on our surroundings. Circling, photographs, sound recordings, sketches, writings and found objects were collected.

Through a number of workshops with the children we created a series of audio/visual pieces and two dimensional artworks based on the changing nature of Whitstable's seafront.
