Eynsham Waterways
I was commissioned by Eynsham Parish Council to undertake a piece of public art for their Wharf Stream Way art trail, a circular walk around the historic environs of Eynsham’s surrounding countryside. Eynsham has a long history as a trading town along the river Thames. Through the middle ages until relatively recently a wide variety of goods were transported by boat, with Eynsham wharf, and its connecting stream, being a key hub.
The several buttress legs that form this piece might suggest the ribs of boats. Carved vertically into the ‘ribs’ is a selection of the goods carried along the Eynsham waterways and beyond: Salt, furze, coal, grain, hay, stone, wood and bricks. The interconnecting leg depicts the existing lock on the Thames, and a lock paddle - the design taken from the same paddles that were used to operate the medieval locks along Wharf Stream.
