Grizedale Sculpture Trail
(1992)
Location : Grizedale Forest Park
Materials : European Oak
Funding : The Grizedale Society/Northern Arts
As part of the rolling programme of residencies at Grizedale Forest Park I was invited to live and work on site for two months (September and October), to create two site specific sculptural seats. I spent the first week walking in the forest, familiarising myself with the landscape and context, as well as seeing the existing sculptures. I worked through a number of design possibilities, eventually arriving at two pieces which explored themes around natural cycles, decay and regeneration.
I sourced freshly felled oak trees from Coniston Water, and oversaw the milling process at Hawkshead Sawmill just a few miles down the road. The Grizedale Centre Workshop was made available to me, so I was able to construct both pieces under cover, using basic hand and machine tools.
We Free Kings
We Free Kings situated along the lower path of the Riding Wood Trail
Both seats are situated along the Riding Wood Trail. We Free Kings sits beneath a fully mature English oak on the lower path. King's Table is situated further along on the upper path. A cutting was created in the hillside to accommodate King's Table. I had the pleasure of working alongside a local expert in dry-stone walling. All the stones we used were found nearby in the woods.
