Nigel William & Richard

Introduction

Nigel William & Richard was formed in 1980, a year after the three of us left art college. We had the idea to live together somewhere in East Kent to spend a year writing original music, gigging, recording and trying to get a record deal with one of the small independent labels. It was a memorable year for a variety of reasons, many of which had nothing to do with music making - memories involving cabbages, chickens, ducks, geese, a mink, Mrs Cline, a Morris Minor, a beaten up caravan and a litter of piglets among many other things.

On a visit to London to promote our music we went to a distribution company on the Edgeware Road. As we climbed the stairs up to the first floor we squeezed past hundreds of copies of Too Drunk To Fuck by the Dead Kennedys (Cherry Red Records). The room upstairs was equally chaotic with people busy packaging up records. We went into a small office where the main guy was hard at it. He asked us what our band name was. We said "Nigel William & Richard" and he replied with " What, like Peter Paul & Mary?" At that point I think we realised that our path ahead would not be straight forward. However, we did meet the guy that ran Cherry Red Records in Wimbledon and he was definitely interested in us. But being from the sticks we were not savvy enough to progress the situation and it came to nothing. Instead we started our own label - Edible Music.

The Edible Music label was created by NW&R at the back end of our time together. Edible Music became an active component in the local music scene, putting on events and releasing recordings to showcase the more obscure and homemade music and sound projects in East Kent during the 1980's.
